The 18th-century estate of Hunderby is populated by a cantankerous old pastor, Edmund (Alex Macqueen), his malevolent housekeeper Dorothy (Davis), and a variety of other randy and hideous characters whose relationship changes with every melodramatic revelation.

I wasn't convinced by Pastor John as a character who is central to the series. As was the case with Nighty Night, Davis may never have even intended to make a second series of Hunderby either, but due to the series winning a BAFTA she was (possibly) nagged into making one, and in doing-so dug her heels in hard and just did whatever the hell it took to kill it from being commissioned for a third series in order for her to move on to the next project, and for which I highly respect her for. Not as good as series 1 Funny in part s very crude in others.

We have not seen a new episode of Julia Davis’s cruel masterpiece since 2012 when it won two British Comedy awards. They don't seem to have struck the right note with this one , still worth a view if you are a fan. The first of the new series felt more steeped in Austen and Dickens than du Maurier, but it still required you to leave your sense of common decency at the door. After watching the first series of Hunderby (a show which, at the time I bought it, I hadn't even heard of), I decided to go ahead and get the second series as I enjoyed the first one so much. With Julia Davis, Alexandra Roach, Alex Macqueen, Rufus Jones. Hunderby is the filthiest filth, but you can get away with a lot by being very good and very funny. There didn’t seem to be as much of the careful structuring that had underpinned the first series. The depths of bad taste were plumbed from the scatological to the psychologically messed-up, and included a few unsavoury rape jokes. “If I hear one more word about your rancid nethers…” said Edmund at one point, and after a while I knew how he felt. Although there was a welcome touch of vintage Blackadder to the best bits, with the script cloaking a variety of dirty jokes in flowery circumlocution, the script was hung entirely on this premise of filthy goings-on in a decadent period setting. I greatly enjoyed the first series which arced to a satisfying conclusion as a knowing and very dark cross between what "Carry On Rebecca" might have been and a Victorian "Blackadder". It continues to be presided over by Dorothy, the deranged Mrs Danvers. Registered in England No. The series is a subversive and an intricately dark parody of period dramas.
