The first five are narrated by Corwin, a Prince of Amber; the second five are narrated by Merlin, Corwin's son. I could already hear his mind clicking: Corwin brought me here to betray me, he was saying to himself. I remember, like it was yesterday, the moment I picked up this book in a library. It is now! But I couldn’t not check it out. A few of the minor plot points/expositions, in the ways in which details were added, broke the immersion for me. It goes under a few different names, but seeing as how I read the Omnibus edition titled The Great Book of Amber, I figured I would discuss that here. The writing style and plot of The Chronicles of Amber was just great. I recall being 13 at my grandmothers for Thanksgiving with this edition fresh from the Science Fiction Book Club. That was kind of a fun-ish romp. Thus was I introduced to the writings of Roger Zelazny. The first book of the two collected in this volume. I will make it brief. There’s a big red jewel that I’m assuming is the Jewel of Judgment and Corwin’s silver gloves. From Arden to the blood-slippery Stairway into the Sea, the air is electrified with the powers of Eric, Random, Bleys, Caine, and all the princes of Amber whom Corwin must overcome. A few audacious con-man moves later, he is travelling between alternate worlds, alternately fleeing, fighting and helping his numerous siblings. I must admit the idea of traveling through shadow challenges my mind and I don't really grasp what kind of beings the princes are, nor why Amber is such a treasured land, nor why they are essentially immortal. The Amber Chronicles is 10 books in total. So far I have finished the first two novels; the Nine Princes in Amber and the Guns of Avalon. And I have no clue what the overlap is between fans of slot machine games and fans of fantasy fiction by an author that’s been dead for 25 years.
