He made two tours to the western Pacific on board the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany. Framed newspapers throughout the school depict various accomplishments and milestones in Shepard's life. The Navy named a supply ship, Template:USNS for him in 2006. The U.S. flight was delayed for technical reasons. He squeezed out of the door and into a sling hoist, and was pulled into the helicopter, which flew both the astronaut and spacecraft to the aircraft carrier USS Lake Champlain.
