Ryan Cecil Jobson is the Neubauer Family Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Chicago. Her other research and teaching interests include translation and multilingual pedagogies. The language and praxis of Vodou proved flexible enough to provide her with the vocabulary to articulate a more nuanced version of diasporic blackness beyond her preconceived notions of an easy or automatic alliance between all black people. Combining more traditional fieldwork methods with photography and collaging, her research seeks to better understand the transnational production of threat, the criminalization of geographies and bodies, and self-making among those categorized as threat/criminal. Her work has been published in the Arts Journal, Journal of West Indian Literature, Small Axe, and Interventions. Small-scale agriculture and mutual aid offer models of resistance to US colonialism as the underlying power structure reinforcing debt and political subservience. Yet, as the literary scholar Vanessa Valdés argues, we know little of the center’s namesake and his drive to collect and establish a renowned archive that emphasized the history, experience, and culture of African descended peoples and communities.
